Professional Tips and TricksIn my 40 years as a house painter and contractor, I've gathered many tips and practices that are now part of my every day routine. Some of these tips simply make my work faster or more efficient. Other tips help produce higher quality results. I'm certain that homeowners painting their own dwellings will benefit from these suggestions. Less-experienced contractors may also find my suggestions helpful, so over the coming days and weeks I hope to provide this information freely via my Twitter feed. Why am I sharing this hard-earned experience? It's my belief that generosity of knowledge and practice brings benefits to the giver and the recipient. In 2016 I spoke with an Edmonton painting contractor who was telling me about her painting crew. It consisted of an unemployed welder, a part-time machinist and a butcher who wanted to make some extra money. The most experience any one of these "painters" had was 8 months. It seemed obvious to me that clients hiring this contractor would not be getting professional results. Ask your contractor about his/her experience, and about who will be working in your home. Anecdote: A client saw an advertisement posted by a house painter in a community newspaper. The painter was hired, and on the first day of work asked for a deposit. He went away with the deposit cheque and returned two hours later with all brand new equipment to begin work. The painter had owned no painting tools previously, and this would be his first attempt at residential house painting. Within a few days, it was obvious that the job would not be completed in a professional manner, and the client had to dismiss the painter—losing his deposit—and hire someone else to finish the work.
